A Day at the Spa

Most people enjoy being pampered occasionally and our elders are no different. We had an afternoon filled with good food, relaxing manicures and pedicures, and some great company! While some had their hair curled or styled, others were treated to makeup and nail polish. Then they finished up with a wonderful lunch and some good conversation.

It makes a good reminder for us that sometimes we need to make time and give a few brief moments for some relaxation. Not just for ourselves, but for others as well!

Prestonsburg HealthCare Neighborhood Face-Off

Everyone enjoys a little competition now and then, and Prestonsburg HealthCare is no different. Our two neighborhoods (Ocean Side and Memory Lane) recently turned into Candy Cane Lane and Winter Wonderland. Stakeholders and elders both decked the halls and decorated their hearts out. Over a several day span, teams from each neighborhood worked to transform their side into a scene worthy of a champion. Chaplain Stephen Clark said, “It has been an intense competition, but our elders have loved every minute of it.” Three local judges came and toured each hallway. When the votes were tallied, Candy Cane Lane won in a split decision, but both sides agree that the true winners are the residents. By the look on the faces of all the residents, it would be hard to disagree with that!

Hall of Fame 2016

Once every year at Prestonsburg HealthCare, we take time to give honor and recognition to a few elders, stakeholders, and community members who have affected us over the years. Our Hall of Fame ceremony is a wonderful time to celebrate the accomplishments of some of our own.

This year we honored elders John Scalf, Minnie Akers, and Brenda Camp, all of whom are some of the most respected and deserving elders in our home. Stakeholder Lynn Watts was recognized for over 22 years of service and for a host of personal and professional accomplishments. Judy Stephens, a community leader who volunteers and spends a great deal of her time assisting our home, was inducted into the Hall of Fame as well.

There was a great number in attendance with friends, family members, community members, and state officials in attendance.

Join us in welcoming the 2016 Class of The Prestonsburg HealthCare Hall of Fame!

A Senior Safari

Prestonsburg HealthCare went on a senior safari to Winchester, Kentucky recently to compete in Signature HealthCare’s annual Senior Olympics. There were races, spelling bees, and trivia games galore in the college park gymnasium. Most importantly, there was a great spirit and a time of competitive fun! Elder Brenda Camp brought home one gold medal and plenty of smiles! It was a wonderful event that all of the elders and stakeholders had a blast at, just don’t ask our chaplain about the tutu!

Santa Fe Spa Day

As part of the Route 66 initiative here at Prestonsburg HealthCare, our ladies recently experienced a day at the spa! The woman’s group was treated to one-on-one time with a stakeholder for a fantastic lunch and some relaxing spa treatments. There were manicures, pedicures, and every other kind of “cures” you could think of! A few stakeholders and volunteers fixed hair and makeup. At the end of the day when everyone had gotten the full treatment, you could see their smiles from across the room. What was planned as a simple day of fun turned into something more–a time to give care as well as be cared for.

Everyone deserves to be pampered every now and again. When was the last time you pampered yourself? More importantly, when was the last time you took the time, energy, and effort to provide that for someone else?

Officer Appreciation Breakfast 2016

Everyone wants someone dependable in their life. It’s just a simple truth that people long for dependability, to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you have a friend or family member that you can count on when the time comes. The City of Prestonsburg has such a friend, and we at Prestonsburg HealthCare wanted to let them know how appreciated they are.

The Prestonsburg City Police Department was invited to Prestonsburg HealthCare Wednesday Morning for a home cooked breakfast. Biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon and everything you could dream of, including some hot and fresh cinnamon rolls was the fare of the day. While this may have been just a small gesture, it was one that came from the heart of all our elders and stakeholders. Thanks again to the Prestonsburg City Police Department, Fire Department, and city officials who strive to be dependable, no matter the circumstance.

Birthday Celebrations!

This past family night at Prestonsburg Healthcare we were able to share in celebrating a few birthday parties with some very special ladies!

Brenda Camp is a retired school teacher who is loved by many! She has such a sweet spirit and is always seen helping others around Prestonsburg HealthCare. She is a blessing to have in our home and we are so glad we could share this special day with her!

Goldie Conn celebrated her 107th Birthday surrounded by family and friends. She has always shared her love for people and is as kindhearted as they come! She loves a good cup of coffee and has always said her favorite food is possum. She truly is one of a kind and it was an honor for us to join her family in celebrating this day!

Pigeon Forge Vacation 2016

What is the longest time you have ever waited for something? Every time you turn around you see a new time saving invention that will revolutionize the way we do things. We live in a day and age where we don’t like to wait any amount of time. Children say all the time, “I want it and I want it now!” Just a few weeks ago during an elder vacation to Pigeon Forge in Tennessee we learned that one of our elders, Lowell Williams, had been patiently waiting for over 40 years to do something we often take for granted.

After a day of sightseeing, shopping, and a great dinner show the topic, everyone began to talk about what they were going to do the next day. One stakeholder mentioned the beautiful Cades Cove, another mentioned another dinner show, until finally someone said the magic word: swimming. Lowell’s face lit up and said that he hadn’t been swimming in over 40 years! Jack Endicott, another elder, quickly agreed that they should go swimming. It was just a year ago that Jack took his first ever trip down a waterslide! Cindy Porter, activity director of Prestonsburg HealthCare, said there was no talking either one of them out of it. They were bound and determined to go swimming! After a trip that evening to the store to buy some swimming trunks and sunscreen, the next day’s plans were set.

Once breakfast was finished and all the food was settled, they made their way to the pool. As the temperature began to rise so did Lynn Watts’ nerves. She said she wasn’t sure who to be more nervous for, herself or Lowell and Jack! After 40 years, Lowell was finally getting to something he loved to do again. Thankfully, swimming is like riding a bike and Lowell didn’t miss a beat, floating, swimming, and splashing just like he did 40 years ago.

There we so many amazing things that happened on this trip. Favorites could be picked from the Dixie Stampede,  the Lumberjack Feud, the picturesque scenery, or the great shopping and stores. Without hesitation, they all said their favorite thing was swimming, because it was a long time coming. It’s not always about how much money you can spend or how much great food you can eat. The shows and sights could never truly replace what really matters: making memories.

When is the last time you made an unforgettable memory? This short trip, even just this one event made, an indelible impression in the life of Lowell Williams.

Every day we have the ability to make memories. Take today and make it count.

Prestonsburg’s Women’s Group Goes Camping!

The Jenny Wiley State Park Campground was taken over Thursday night by the Women’s Group from Prestonsburg Health Care. The group enjoyed games of corn hole and plenty of great food! As they ate their s’mores and talked the night away, old memories were shared and new memories were made. Elder Opal Gibson said, “It’s so calming to be out looking at the stars and all of God’s creation.”

Do yourself a favor this week and step outside, look into the clear night sky, and soak in the calming peace of God’s creation! If you’re anything like Opal, you will be glad that you did!
